Eijade Football Club in Austria upgraded its existing football field lighting with ONOR Lighting’s VEGA series LED sports floodlights. The objective was not simply to replace the previous high-power luminaires. The new system needed to improve illuminance and uniformity, reduce unnecessary glare and spill light, and lower the total installed electrical load while making use of the existing 16-metre lighting infrastructure.
The completed system delivers approximately 300 lux average illuminance with a uniformity ratio above 0.78. The fixture configuration uses 12 × 1800W and 4 × 1200W VEGA floodlights, replacing 16 × 2500W luminaires.

The Challenge
Football lighting is not only about achieving a target lux value. Players need to track a fast-moving ball from changing viewing directions, so uniformity, glare control and visual comfort are critical. For this retrofit, the design also needed to work with the club’s existing poles and reduce the electrical load of the previous system.
- Improve usable illumination across the playing surface.
- Maintain high uniformity with fewer dark and excessively bright zones.
- Control glare and unnecessary spill light.
- Reuse the existing 16 m pole infrastructure.
- Reduce installed power and long-term operating demand.
- Provide a robust system for training and match use.
ONOR Lighting Solution
ONOR selected a mixed VEGA configuration rather than applying the same wattage at every position. The final arrangement combines 1800W and 1200W luminaires so that power and optical distribution can be matched to different throw distances and target areas.

In sports lighting, the quality of the optical distribution and aiming strategy is as important as fixture wattage. Excessive intensity in the wrong direction can increase glare without creating useful illuminance on the pitch. Project-specific beam selection helps direct more light toward the target area and less toward the surrounding environment.
Lighting Performance
Average horizontal illuminance: approximately 250 lux. Uniformity U0: greater than 0.78. High uniformity reduces the contrast between darker and brighter zones, supporting more consistent visual conditions as players move around the pitch.
A Verified 36% Reduction in Installed Power
The previous installation used 16 × 2500W luminaires, equal to 40.0 kW. The new system uses 12 × 1800W plus 4 × 1200W, equal to 25.6 kW. The reduction in installed power is therefore 14.4 kW, or 36%.
Installed power comparison calculated from the project values published on the ONOR website.
| Accuracy correction: The existing ONOR project page describes the reduction from 40.0 kW to 25.6 kW as “nearly 60%.” The arithmetic is 36%. The updated case study should use 36% to keep the project data internally consistent. |
Glare and Spill-Light Control
A successful football lighting system should direct as much useful light as possible onto the playing area while limiting unnecessary light outside the target zone. Controlled optics and careful aiming are especially important where sports facilities are close to residential areas, roads or neighbouring properties.
From Lighting Calculation to Project Support
ONOR Lighting supports sports-lighting projects with more than fixture supply. Depending on the project, engineering support can include DIALux, Relux or AGi32 simulation, optical selection, luminaire layout, IES files, pole configuration, aiming recommendations, installation guidance and commissioning support. This allows the fixture, optics, poles and aiming strategy to be considered as one lighting system.
