Professional LED Tennis Court Lighting | 1,859lux ONOR Project

Up to 1,859 Lux · U0 0.91 · 64 VEGA LED Floodlights · 21.6 m Lighting Poles

ONOR Lighting has completed a professional LED tennis lighting project for Parque Mirador del Este – Centro Nacional de Tenis in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The project covers the main tennis stadium and six additional tennis courts, combining high-output ONOR VEGA sports floodlights with project-specific optical distributions and professional photometric design.

Rather than using one standard luminaire configuration throughout the venue, ONOR engineered different combinations of 600W, 1000W, 1200W and 1800W VEGA floodlights according to the size, pole position and performance target of each court. Across the project, the lighting design uses 64 LED sports floodlights on 20 lighting poles, with an overall designed installed load of approximately 79.9 kW. The main stadium alone uses 12 × 1200W and 4 × 1800W luminaires, with four 71-foot / approximately 21.6-meter poles. Main Stadium Court - 1750lux

The completed nighttime photographs show the result clearly: bright playing surfaces, strong visual separation between the courts and their surroundings, and a consistent professional appearance across the tennis complex.

Different Courts, Different Lighting Requirements

One of the key characteristics of this project is that ONOR did not treat every tennis court as an identical lighting application.

The main stadium requires substantially higher illuminance and more demanding uniformity, while the surrounding competition and training courts need excellent visibility with a more optimized installed-power configuration.

This is why the project combines different VEGA wattages and optical distributions rather than relying on a single floodlight type.

Main Stadium Court

The main stadium lighting design uses:

12 × VG-1200 NB
4 × VG-1800 NB

Total installed design power is 21.6 kW, with a maintenance factor of 0.80. The design uses four 71-foot lighting poles. Main Stadium Court - 1750lux Main Stadium Court - 1750lux

The principal playing area achieved:

Performance Result
Average Illuminance 1,859 lux
Minimum Illuminance 1,697 lux
Maximum Illuminance 2,046 lux
Uniformity U0 0.91
Emin / Emax 0.83

These figures demonstrate particularly strong illuminance consistency across the competition playing area. Main Stadium Court - 1750lux(1)

Uniformity is especially important in tennis because players constantly track a relatively small ball moving at high speed through different viewing directions. High average illuminance alone is not enough; large bright-to-dark variations can make the ball more difficult to follow.

The combination of 1,859 lux average and U0 0.91 therefore represents one of the strongest technical highlights of this project.

More Than 1,000 Lux Across the Additional Courts

The other courts were also designed at a high lighting level.

For Courts 1 and 2, ONOR used 4 × VEGA 1200W MB and 8 × VEGA 1800W MB, with a total design load of 19.12 kW. Court 1-2

The calculated performance was:

Court Eavg Emin U0
Court 1 1,200 lux 1,008 lux 0.84
Court 2 1,193 lux 952 lux 0.80
Court 3 1,135 lux 1,038 lux 0.91
Court 4 1,078 lux 968 lux 0.90
Court 5 1,196 lux 1,012 lux 0.85
Court 6 1,195 lux 941 lux 0.79

Court 3's playing area, for example, reaches 1,135 lux average with U0 0.91, while Court 4 reaches 1,078 lux with U0 0.90. Court 3(1) Court 4(1) Courts 5 and 6 calculate at approximately 1,200 lux average, with U0 0.85 and 0.79 respectively. Court 5-6(1) Court 5-6(1)

The result is a venue where both the main show court and the surrounding courts receive high-quality lighting rather than concentrating performance only on the stadium court.

Project-Specific VEGA Configurations

Courts 3 and 4 use a more mixed power configuration:

4 × VEGA 600W MB
4 × VEGA 1000W MB
4 × VEGA 1200W MB

Each of these court systems has a calculated installed power of approximately 11.22 kW. Court 3 Court 4

Courts 5 and 6 use:

8 × VEGA 1200W MB
4 × VEGA 1800W MB

with approximately 16.7 kW installed design power. Court 5-6

This multi-wattage approach is important.

A professional tennis lighting system should not be designed by simply specifying the same wattage at every pole. Throw distance, pole position, aiming angle and the area covered by each luminaire are different.

Using different output levels allows the lighting designer to place the required light where it contributes most to the final calculation.

VEGA LED Stadium Floodlight

Precision Optics Instead of Simply Adding More Power

The VEGA luminaires in this project use both NB (narrow beam) and MB (medium beam) optical configurations.

The main stadium uses narrow-beam versions to manage the longer throw distances created by the four high lighting poles, while the surrounding courts use medium-beam configurations according to their geometry.

This illustrates an important principle in professional sports lighting:

better lighting does not necessarily come from installing more watts. It comes from putting the right amount of light in the right place.

ONOR's current VEGA platform supports multiple optical configurations and power levels from 500W to 1800W. The product uses precision optics for controlled light distribution, together with an adjustable mounting system designed for accurate aiming. onorledlighting.com

High Uniformity Improves Real Playing Conditions

The aerial photographs of the completed venue are especially valuable because they show how the simulated design translates into the actual environment.

Across the illuminated courts, the playing surfaces appear bright and clearly defined, without the severe hot spots and dark areas often seen in poorly designed floodlighting installations.

This is consistent with the calculated uniformities of the individual playing areas, which range from approximately 0.79 to 0.91.

For players, this matters when:

serving upward into the field of view, tracking high balls, moving rapidly between baseline and net, and following the ball across different parts of the court.

In other words, a good tennis lighting system must deliver both quantity of light and quality of distribution.

Glare Was Evaluated During the Lighting Design

Glare is another important issue for tennis because players frequently look upward while serving and tracking high balls.

For this reason, the project design did not evaluate lux alone. The simulations also included GR observer calculations at player-level viewing positions.

For example, the Main Stadium simulation evaluated observer positions across a 360° viewing sector, while the surrounding courts were calculated using dedicated GR observer points. Main Stadium Court - 1750lux(1) Court 3(1)

This allows luminaire aiming to be considered as part of the design rather than adjusted only after installation.

Why ONOR VEGA Was Selected for the Project

For large tennis facilities, the luminaire needs to do more than produce high lumen output.

It also needs optical flexibility, mechanical reliability, accurate aiming and manageable maintenance requirements.

ONOR VEGA is engineered specifically for high-output professional sports lighting. According to the current product specification, the series covers 500W to 1800W, offers multiple beam distributions, reaches up to approximately 150 lm/W, and is available with 3000K–5700K color temperatures. The platform is rated IP67 and IK10 and is designed for a service life exceeding 100,000 hours. onorledlighting.com

VEGA also uses a modular structure and supports remote driver configurations, making maintenance more practical for high-mounted sports luminaires. Its adjustable mounting system and optional laser aiming assistance are particularly useful in projects where dozens of luminaires must be aimed precisely from tall poles. onorledlighting.com

For a multi-court tennis complex such as Parque Mirador del Este, these features make it possible to use one luminaire platform across several different lighting requirements while changing wattage and optics according to each zone.

From Photometric Simulation to the Finished Courts

One of the strongest elements of this project is that the engineering data can be compared directly with the finished installation.

Before installation, ONOR's lighting design covered:

pole positions → luminaire selection → wattage → optical distribution → aiming points → illuminance → uniformity → glare evaluation → false-color simulation

The resulting venue photographs show the finished courts operating under the designed LED system.

This engineering-to-installation workflow is especially important for international sports projects because the customer can evaluate expected lighting performance before equipment is ordered and installed.

A Complete Tennis Lighting Solution from ONOR Lighting

The Parque Mirador del Este project demonstrates ONOR Lighting's capability to deliver more than LED floodlights.

The project combines professional photometric engineering, high-mast lighting design, multiple optical distributions and high-output VEGA LED sports luminaires into one coordinated tennis lighting solution.

The final design covers a main stadium and six additional courts with 64 VEGA floodlights, while achieving approximately 1,100–1,200 lux on the individual outer playing courts and substantially higher performance on the main stadium.

For contractors, tennis clubs, stadium operators and sports-facility developers, this type of project provides an important reference: lighting performance should be engineered before the luminaires are installed.
