McPherson Group raises funds to improve new sports facility

McPherson, Kansas (KWCH) – A group in McPherson is raising funds to improve the school district’s new sports facility. In October, the athletics and grass football fields behind McPherson High School opened. Other improvements will also be made, including grandstands, press boxes, lighting, scoreboards and more. This was made possible with the support of the community through the Fund the Field campaign.
Carol Swanson has represented Fund the Field and witnessed the expansion of sports and programs at the McPherson School District and McPherson College.
“Between college, high school and high school usage, it becomes an unmanageable situation after a while,” Swenson said.
For decades, there has been talk of the McPherson School District splitting from the academy to create its own pitch on the grass field behind the high school.
”This gives our children the opportunity to play football and run in a beautiful home. This will be the first time we have a home in 70 years,” said Swenson.
Construction work on the new sports ground began last June and the facility opened in October. The Field Committee plans to raise $1 million by August 1 to add improvements, including lighting and scoreboards. To date, the organization has raised over $800,000.
McPherson $418 Superintendent Dr. Shiloh Vincent expressed his excitement at the completion of the project.
“I think this is a testament to the McPherson community and what it really looks like to partner with the community for the benefit of students,” said Dr. Vincent.
